About the folks at Himinbjorg Mastiffs
To understand us let me tell you about Beowulf.
Our first mastiff came to us from Greiner Hall Mastiffs in May of 2001. We had no idea about the venture we were about to embark on. Beowulf truly changed the direction of our lives. From Beowulf we learned a lot about mastiffs, their demeanor, their look and their presence. In 2001, we did not picture the future we had in store for ourselves.We believe our dogs should be sound in structure. They should have broad, deep heads. The bone should be heavy and sound. Muscles are thick and strong. Shoulders should be broad and hind quarters should be powerful. But the most important thing about our dogs will be their temperament. They should be confident and self assured. They should be even-tempered and loyal. All of our dogs are house dogs. They play in our family room and sleep on our bed.
One of the things we think leads to sounder dogs is their diet. We believe strongly in feeding the RAW diet. We feed predominately raw chicken backs and ground vegetables mixed with yogurt. We used to feed Giant breed dog food, but found that when we switched to the RAW diet we had better jaw development, thicker fur with more of a glow. The bone development seems more level and less painful for the dogs. The dogs also, always clean their bowls; with store bought dog food it was hit or miss if the dogs finished their food.
